Working Together for the Future of Unity Pond

Unity Pond, or Lake Winnecook has a watershed of more than 29 square miles. The combination of the physical dynamics of the lake and legacy phosphorus pollution from agricultural land results in eutrophication and large algal blooms, which are harmful to human, animal, and plant life. CWS is proud to be supporting important work to improve water quality in Unity pond in partnership with the Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District. Unity Pond has gone through two phases thus far in an attempt to create a watershed management plan to improve the water quality by reducing phosphorus loading into the lake.

CWS Environmental Chemist Jim Killarney, along with many other individuals and local organizations, will be consulting on the next phase of the management plan. The awarded grant through the Clean Water Act, is under a 2 year contract (Oct 2020- Dec 2022) and will closely examine water quality surveys, monitoring and modeling of the watershed.
