James is a Senior Editor of BioScience (Impact Factor: 8.589), the journal of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), a nonprofit scientific society. He collaborates with BioScience's senior staff and the journal's publishing partner, Oxford University Press, to provide scientists, decision-makers, and the general public with peer-reviewed and authoritative overviews of current research in biology, accompanied by essays and discussions relevant to the field.

Alongside his work on the journal's peer-reviewed material, he initiated the In Their Own Words oral history series, interviewing accomplished scientists and science communicators including Neil deGrasse Tyson, Rita Colwell, Nalini Nadkarni, and Gene Likens, among many others. He has also written for BioScience on topics including scientific communication, the climate emergency, the role of science in informing sound public policy, and the importance of international representation on editorial boards.

 James also works with AIBS staff on a number of other programs aimed at scientific professional education and science communication, including hosting BioScience's podcast interview series, BioScience Talks. Prior to joining AIBS, James was principal of Dominion Editing and Transcription, LLC, an Arlington, Virginia–based firm with clients including the Global Alliance for Women's Health, the Washington Post, and AIBS.
